Stranger Cole (Jamaica)
ONE NIGHT ONLY
in New Zealand 19th February 2011 @ Galatos, Auckland
Overjoyed to be performing for the first time ever in New Zealand, this living legend of 1960s Jamaican ska and reggae will shortly arrive on our shores direct from Jamaica!
Born Wilburn Theodore Cole in 1945 in West Kingston, Jamaica, Stranger Cole earned his nickname “Stranger” early in life because he didn’t resemble anyone else in his family.
Cole is most well known for his many hit songs, including "When You Call My Name", "Just Like A River", "World's Fair", "Artibella”, “Bangarang” and “Rough & Tough”. He has worked with countless talented and well-known artists and producers, such as Duke Reid, Ken Booth, and the Skatalites.
Cole is still one of the hottest and most sought after artists who can blend oldies with the modern songs to satisfy the young and the young at heart. His fame and popularity are highly rated in places such as the United States, Europe, Canada, Africa, Japan and the Caribbean. With his belief strongly rooted in the love of live, peace and unity, Stranger Cole salutes his fellow men with respect and honour through music.
Opening for Stranger and hailing from Montreal, Canada will be DJ Mossman, returning to New Zealand after his successful visit here in early 2010. Known for spinning rare and unreleased tracks of Jamaican ska, rocksteady and early reggae, Mossman also produced the Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae movie soundtrack. Cole is featured in the 2009 documentary as he and other legendary singers and musicians of the rocksteady era come together after 40 years to perform an All-Stars reunion concert in Kingston, Jamaica. The film screened across New Zealand in 2010 as part of the World Cinema Showcase, and while in New Zealand Cole will be promoting the release of the Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae DVD.
