A record number of digital entries for the 2021 Molly Morpeth Canaday Award - Painting and Drawing (MMCA) have been received from artists all over New Zealand. Some 560 entries were reviewed by our preliminary Judges Francis McWhannell, Natasha Matila-Smith and Hanahiva Rose.

“An incredible amount of entries were received in such a difficult and challenging past year ” says MMCA Coordinator Nichola Waugh “Our guest judge Karl Chitham will have the incredible task of reviewing works that were selected and identifying the award winners.”

Entrants were notified of the results in mid-January and artworks are on their way to Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi – Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre. 

A diverse range of works were selected by our preliminary judges, a full list of artists and works have been published on MMCA website. “ This year we will see some works that push the boundaries of painting and drawing, alongside works that are of a high calibre in the painting and drawing discipline. I am looking forward to seeing the final exhibition,” says Nichola Waugh.

The 2021 Molly Morpeth Canaday Award - Painting and Drawing is presented by Arts Whakatāne and Whakatāne Museum and Arts, exhibition will be open for viewing from Sunday 14 February - Sunday 4 April 2019 at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi - Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre.
