A Symphony of Treats for Children These July School Holidays

Capital E hosts a symphony of treats for families and children these July school holidays. From 4 July – 22 August, Capital E Central will receive a finely tuned makeover with the new installation Musical Forest, host digital and musical workshops, and present the Wellington public season of Stealing Games by acclaimed New Zealand playwright, Gary Henderson.

Families will whoosh, rustle and play their way through the free, interactive and entrancing forest of sound. Children will journey their way through Musical Forest fuelled with their creations of Musical Mobiles, musical stepping stones and even a jandal pipe organ! The new installation is located in Capital E Central at 4 Queens Wharf and is free entry.

Accompanying the installation is an array of musical workshops and performances every Saturday throughout July that will inspire young creatives’ musical ears. On Saturday 4th July from 10.30am at Capital E Central, international M?ori artist, Jerome Kavanagh will play his stunning taonga p?oro in a special Matariki Whanau Day performance and workshop. From the nguru to the pataatara and majestic k?auau toroa, children will share in the sounds and stories of instruments gifted by ancestors to New Zealand. In the second half of the workshop, children will make their own putangitangi with clay.

Chamber Music New Zealand collaborates with Capital E for the first time on Saturday 11th July from 11am with a one-off classical free concert by children, for children. The winners of the Wellington District CMNZ National Contest will share their Magical Musical Moments followed by a performance by Virtuoso Strings.

Strike Percussion performs their smooth beats under the sails on Queens Wharf on Saturday 18th July from 10.30am-11.15am in Beat It. Then from 11.30am-12.30pm, Strike will run an interactive workshop with children interested in picking up drums sticks to smash out a rocking rhythm. Entry to the performance is free, and $8 for the workshop.

On Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th July from 9.30am-3.30pm, Capital E will be participating in Wellington’s Open House weekend. To celebrate 150 years of Wellington as the capital city, children can explore the best of what Capital E has to offer in their public space and digital studios all free!

Capital E’s Digital Studios are another sure fire reason to visit Capital E this July. The OnTV studio features two brand new workshops. Children can create an historic newscast in Ye Olde News - a brand new collaboration workshop with Museum of Wellington City & Sea. This workshop is $45 per child and features on 7th and 14th or 16th July from 10am-3pm. In another special collaboration with Chamber Music New Zealand, children will get out in the city to take images and record sounds of Wellington in Soundscape Your City using the special equipment from OnTV and MediaLab with an added bonus of the guidance of award winning composer, Marcus Jackson. This two day workshop takes place from 9th 10th July from 10am-3pm and is $90 per child for participation.

MediaLab also feature cutting edge technology in their brilliant workshops for the tech focused minds. Children can Think It, Make It, Print It in a workshop creating 3D modelling software. In A Slice of Raspberry Pi, children check out the latest Raspberry Pi technology has to offer. Both workshops take place from 7th  8th  14th & 15th  July from 10.30am-3pm. Participation is $45 per child for one workshop or $90 for two.

Finally, children aged 8+ will be sure not to miss Capital E’s National Theatre for Children’s Wellington season of Stealing Games by acclaimed New Zealand playwright Gary Henderson. Audiences will embark on a highly physical story told by four actors at Hannah Playhouse from Monday 13-Friday 17 July at 11am.
