Mossgreen-Webb's dedicated gallery programme launches in August 2017 with Colours from China (17 August – 9 September 2017), an exhibition of contemporary Chinese art curated by Beijing based art critic, Liao Wen. This inaugural presentation is the first of an ongoing series of exhibitions, collaborative projects and events that will complement the auction calendar.
Working with industry professionals across the creative sector in New Zealand and off shore, Mossgreen-Webb's Gallery will showcase a diverse cross section of visual arts and design projects. Alongside the exhibition-based component, we are developing a multi-platform dialogue of public events, artist and curator talks, panel discussions, critical writing and digital content.
The gallery programme will be overseen by arts professional, Jessica Pearless. Formerly the Manager of Webb’s Fine Art Department, she re-joins Mossgreen-Webb’s as Gallery Exhibitions Manager, bringing with her 18 years of experience in arts management, teaching and mentoring within the sector. Jessica holds a Master of Fine Arts (Honours) degree from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland and is a practicing artist with a longstanding exhibition history in New Zealand.
Jessica states, “By creating a dedicated gallery space, Mossgreen-Webb’s is able to offer programming that is complementary to New Zealand’s visual art community and to add a distinctive voice to the current conversation on visual arts and design.” She continues, “The gallery’s approach is a collaborative one. We are inviting local and international professionals across the sector: artists, curators, academics, arts writers and collectors to contribute to projects across a range of disciplines.”
In October, Mossgreen-Webb’s will present Organised Form (5 – 20 October), a project that examines philosophies inherent in Modernism and Wabi-Sabi, a concept in traditional Japanese aesthetics constituting a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete".
For the exhibition, Auckland based furniture designer, Duncan Rooney will create a series of works that cross the peripheries of sculpture, art and furniture, employing the technique of triple baked terracotta into his elegant aesthetic. Sculptor Veronica Herber’s refined works constructed of delicately torn washi tape on paper creating works that explore the process of intuition and the visual form of the grid. Organised Form will coincide with Artweek Auckland (7 – 15 October).
END.
