Born and raised in South Africa and currently residing in New Zealand, the artist traces his Lithuanian Jewish roots during the exhibition “Mirror” captivating festival attendees with its profound exploration of personal heritage and how it influenced his creative path.

Throughout the past week, visitors to Auckland's "Public Record" gallery have been immersed in Penn's thought-provoking exhibition, which culminated on Saturday, April 20, with “Talk and Meet the Artist” event co-hosted by the gallery and the Lithuanian Society of New Zealand. During the live meeting with the artist festival participants had a unique opportunity to hear Richard’s intimate insights into the genesis of his award-winning exhibition, revealing how his exploration of his father's gestures catalysed his artistic journey.

"Festival-goers have been deeply moved by Richard Penn's exhibition, which resonates with the Lithuanian community in New Zealand on a profoundly personal level," remarked festival curator Eglė Šimkevičiūtė Kulvelis. "Penn's work serves as a testament to the enduring connection that individuals of Lithuanian descent maintain with their heritage, offering a poignant reflection on the complex interplay between personal narrative and artistic expression."

Penn's journey to self-discovery and artistic enlightenment began with exploring his familial roots. Despite never setting foot in Lithuania, the homeland of his Jewish grandparents, Penn's artistic endeavours served as a bridge between continents and generations. Through evocative portraits of his father, Penn delves into the essence of lineage and inheritance, capturing fleeting moments that transcend time and space.

"Studying these photographs revealed to me not only my past but also my future," Penn explained during the presentation. "Each gesture, each expression, serves as a thread connecting generations, weaving together a narrative of continuity and transformation."

His video piece, "Mirror", initially showcased at the prestigious Everard Read Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa, garnered critical acclaim and was awarded the runner up prize for the Everard Read Art Award. Penn's multidimensional exploration of cultural heritage, presented through video portraits, ink drawings, pastel sketches, and paintings, invites viewers to contemplate the enduring legacy of identity.

As an independent artist, Richard Penn has earned international acclaim for his innovative approach to artistic expression. With exhibitions at esteemed venues such as The Everard Read Gallery in Johannesburg and Cape Town and The Origins Center Museum in Johannesburg, Penn's work transcends boundaries and disciplines, encompassing painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics. His recent accolades include the 2022 Portage Ceramics Award and a solo exhibition of ceramics and drawings in Auckland in 2023.
