CELEBRATED PHOTOGRAPHER ANS WESTRA TO HOLD BACK-TO-BACK EXHIBITIONS IN WELLINGTON & GISBORNE?

Following on from their success at the Auckland Art Fair 2013, {Suite} Gallery and PAULNACHE present 'Back-to-Back Exhibitions' in Wellington and Gisborne, by iconic New Zealand photographer Ans Westra.

On show in Wellington will be “Rotorua Show”, a selection of b/w and colour images made by Ans during time spent in Rotorua in the early 1960s, and more recent colour abstractions made in thermal areas during the last few years. On show in Gisborne will be “East Coast Show”, a selection of b/w images made on the East Coastduring the 1960s – 80s. Included in this exhibition is an early self-portrait of the artist and several images from Ans’ seminal 1963 series Washday at the Pa.

Born 1937 in Leiden, the Netherlands, Westra immigrated to New Zealand in 1957 and soon after began her career as a fulltime freelance documentary photographer. She is responsible for the most comprehensive documentation of M?ori culture over 50 years of significant social and political change, and has produced some of the most important images in New Zealand photographic history.

Ans Westra lives and works in Wellington, New Zealand.
