Filmmaker Maisey Mata is invited to Wh?riki Manaw?hine ? Hauraki, a women’s safe house, to document its clients and raise awareness of domestic violence. While there, she meets four women with very different backgrounds and stories to tell: Sasha Miller, Moira Porou, Cat Mihinui and Teresa Cummings.

Written by director, actor and award-winning playwright Jamie McCaskill, Not in our Neighbourhood makes its Auckland debut at Auckland Arts Festival 2016.

Based on McCaskill’s own observations from time spent working at the Hauraki refuge, this remarkable piece of documentary theatre takes a close look behind the mask of domestic violence –the despair, the misguided loyalties, the pain and the hope.

Kali Kopae (Hikoi) takes on the roles of all five women in an astounding virtuoso performance that brings the voices and experiences of abuse survivors and support workers to the stage with truth, integrity and passion.

Using humor to tell some of the darkest stories, and introducing us to characters we all know, Not in our Neighbourhood goes beyond entertainment, exposing the reality of family violence in our society and becoming an unforgettable experience in the process.

‘…a truthful look at domestic violence and its far reaching effects. Kali Kopae’s solo performance is totally engrossing’ - thewireless.co.nz

‘Jamie McCaskill and Kali Kopae are a dynamic team, using their combined skills to produce theatre that goes to the heart of who we are’ – Theatreview.com
