Photival is back for its third edition. In collaboration with Wellington's most innovative art spaces, the capital’s only dedicated photography festival is reflective and current. The festival runs from 4 May through to 26 May.

The festival encourages Wellingtonians to walk their city and connect with potent, current photographic imagery. Partnering with the Adam Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, Te Papa, Photospace, Flux, Suite, Nga Taonga and Te Auaha, the festival is a city-wide event and brings exhibitions, talks, workshops, behind-the-scenes events and a weekend-long film binge to the public for one month. 

Save the Children’s incredible 100 year history is documented through moving portraits of children from around the world at Wellington Museum's, Flux, while near-by is the NZ Portait Gallery with works by Edith Amatuanai, who has a double-billing with a survey of her work showing concurrently at Adam Art Gallery. Te Auaha - The NZ Institute of Creativity, not only showcases select work from student phtotographers, but also hosts the Photival film weekend - two days of films screening non-stop about NZ photographers including Peter Peyrer, Marti Friedlander and Robin Morrison.

Photival Director, Demi Heath, says the line-up this year is bountiful, and she’s particularly keen to attend the behind-the-scenes tour at Te Papa with curator Athol McCredie.

“We’re so lucky to be able to share Te Papa’s photographic archive with a handful of enthusiasts. The archive is closed to the public ordinarily, so anyone who’s dreamed of a backstage pass - this is your moment, book!”.
