Shalee Fitzsimmons (Ngāti Tūwharetoa), Art Director of Capital, was awarded Best Designer at the 2020 Webstar Magazine Media Awards in Auckland last Friday, beating out Home Style magazine for first place.

Judges said, “Capital is capital! The covers of this magazine are intriguing, powerful and clear – perfectly pitched for the visually savvy and discerning Wellington market. They were also consistent in style, showing the art director’s strong vision. Shalee is clearly a highly intelligent and imaginative art director, one who understands not only typography, but the power of imagery and how to obtain it.”

Shalee, who has been the Art Director for Capital since its inception in 2013, says, “There aren’t many jobs where your mad ideas are accepted and even encouraged. Capital to me represents the best things about Wellington – it’s creative, interesting and lively. This win just confirms we’re representing Wellington well on the national stage. Plus my Mum is really stoked.” Producing Capital is a team effort, she says, “and we have a talented team.”

Capital columnist Melody Thomas was also recognised at the awards. She received a Highly Commended Award in the Best Columnist category for her regular women, parenting and family focused “Wahine” column. Judges said, “Melody has a clear voice and offers a fresh perspective in her current affairs commentary. Her engaging columns have a gentle rhythm, asking ‘what if?’ of her readers, rather than lecturing.”

Editor of the local lifestyle magazine, Alison Franks, is delighted with the awards and says, “It’s great to see Wellington and Capital recognised. We can all enjoy this win.”
