Printmaking: Beyond the Frame is an exhibition of the work of members of the Central Print Council Aotearoa New Zealand (CPCANZ). The works have been selected by John Pusateri, Director of the Auckland Print Studio and Linda Tyler from the University of Auckland. The title of this exhibition refers to the frame that surrounds a two dimensional work, isolating it from the wall and forming a barrier of protection or decoration. It also refers to the contemporary perception of print. In this exhibition artists investigate a variety of technologies and ideas while retaining a common reference point in traditional printmaking processes.

Dark Arts: Twenty years of the Holloway Press curated by Francis McWhannell

Dark Arts celebrates the work of the Holloway Press, the University of Auckland’s fine press, which was founded by Associate-Professor Peter Simpson and Master Printer Alan Loney in 1994. The Press was named for Ron Holloway (1909-2003) of the Griffin Press, who donated the printing equipment that formed its basis. The publishing programme of the Holloway Press centred on works of special literary, artistic, scholarly and historical interest – ill-suited to commercial publication, but appropriate to the technology of handpress printing. The Press thus participated in the tradition of small press publishing in New Zealand pioneered by the likes of Ron Holloway, Bob Lawry, Denis Glover and Leo Bensemann. Holloway Press books remain remarkable both for the quality of their content – with work done by some of New Zealand’s most important creative personalities – and for their superb production values. Indeed, after twenty years of activity, it is clear that the Press has not dabbled in the dark arts of printing, it has mastered them.

Christchurch artist Sam Harrison (born 1985) draws his subjects from life then works on large scale plywood sheets to create the blocks for his woodcut print portraits of naked men and women. Gallerist Andrew Jensen describes him as making “a thorough visceral enquiry, raking across the terrain of the body to expose the imperfect maps of our emotional and psychological histories.”

1pm, Saturday 26 July The Future of Printmaking in New Zealand: A panel discussion with renowned artist Professor Carole Shepheard, Manukau School of Visual Arts lecturer Steve Lovett chaired by Jacqueline Aust.

1pm, Saturday 2 August Guest exhibitors Jeff Thomson, Kate McLean and Alexis Neal explain the use of print in their work.

1pm, Saturday 23 August Francis McWhannell, curator of Dark Arts: Twenty Years of the Holloway Press, interviews founder Peter Simpson about the Press’s history.

1pm, Saturday 30 August Brendan O’Brien, a Wellington-based hand printer, reflects on his involvement with the Holloway Press.  

PUBLICATIONS: A catalogue for Printmaking: Beyond the Frame with an essay by Dr Robin Woodward of the Art History Department is available for sale for $10. The Holloway Press 1994-2013: A checklist of publications is available for purchase for $30.
