Following the globally popular trends of crowdfunding and crowdsourcing, a Waitakere-based start-up Our Place Events has launched a campaign to "Crowdfund A Boat Party", set to happen in Auckland in March. Crowdfunding is a mechanism that allows large groups of people to donate small amounts of money to bring a project or goal to fruition. In this case, keen boat party-goers will provide the seed money for the event by giving money and claiming various rewards through NZ's own crowdfunding platform, PledgeMe. Our Place Events has also taken the crowdsourcing trend one step further, by asking party-goers to help choose the one of the DJ's that will be playing the event through a voting poll being run on Facebook. The Boat Party marks the beginning of Seaweek, New Zealand’s annual national week about the sea and 5% of ticket sales go to Sustainable Coastlines. Event Director Laura O'Connell-Rapira says, "We Kiwi's love our music and we love our ocean - so I figure, what better way to connect the crowd with the cause - caring for our ocean - than to throw a party on a boat. I just need the crowd's help to make that happen." Ms O'Connell-Rapira's goal is a fairly ambitious one, as the company's tagline is "Changing The World One Event At A Time" 'Bass The Boat' will depart from Viaduct Basin at noon on Sunday 2nd March. The boat will host 130 or so keen party-goers and cruise the Waitemata Harbour while DJ's spin bass-driven tunes before returning to shores later that night.
