Heaven Bent has been Living Gospel in Auckland City for 19 years. The diversity and beauty of gospel music, along with the inspirational teaching of Tony Backhouse – undoubtedly the foremost gospel conductor in Australasia- motivated a group of people to form their own choir which later evolved into Heaven Bent. Who would have foreseen that 19 years later, after many phases of growth and change, the choir would still be together singing stronger and better than ever!
Heaven Bent Gospel Choir love to celebrate and share their history, sense of community, and passion for this music, so join us on Saturday August 22nd at the Michael Park School Auditorium, Ellerslie, and be prepared to be uplifted!
“Gospel’s links to other kinds of music – among them soul, blues, folk, and classical choral – combined with its catchy simplicity, make the music familiar and appealing straight away,” says choir director Phil May. “It's uplifting and it brings people together!”
The choir’s performance will cover a wide range of songs from heartfelt traditional spirituals such as ‘Deep River’, the bluesy melodies of Mahalia Jacksons ‘Lord, I’m Willing to Run All The Way’, through to more contemporary arrangements such as Bernice Johnson Reagon’s ‘I Remember I Believe’.
Also presented on the Living Gospel bill will be a number of smaller group arrangements for songs such as the spiritual ‘All Night All Day’ and the traditional gospel blues ‘Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning’.
