DOC2DOC is a new event co-ordinated by the Screen Directors Guild of New Zealand, where documentary filmmakers get together and show works in various states of progress. The main aim behind DOC2DOC is to inspire filmmakers and to create a healthy community where they can share knowledge and feel supported by their peers.
DOC2DOC was formed in response to a DMANZ meeting (Documentary Makers of Aotearoa in NZ) in Auckland, where filmmakers expressed a missing gap in their practice, and it has also been inspired by similar models such as Pecha Kucha, and Doculink (US based group).
Our first event is scheduled for this coming Wednesday, 1st April, 7.30pm at The Lounge Bar at Galatos (17 Galatos Street Auckland).
There will be a chance to mix and mingle after the presentation when drinks will be served. You don’t have to be making documentaries or be a member of the guild to attend, everyone is welcome and we really hope you can make it!
How will it run
Out of a call for proposals we made a month ago, four filmmakers have been selected to screen selects from their ‘works in progress’. They will also have the opportunity to ask three questions to the audience after the screening and get feedback on their films. Acclaimed filmmaker Leanne Pooley (The Promise, Haunting Douglas, Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls) will be chairing the event and each presentation will be limited to 15 minutes. The filmmakers range from emerging to established directors and their projects are just as diverse. Below is a brief overview of our line up:
Daytime Tiger - Director Costa Botes
Documentary feature | Currently in post-production
What happens when a man discovers in late middle age that he is going mad? This is a study of a character who some thought was unbearable before he started going crazy. Now most people would find him impossible
War with No Guns - Director William Watson
Documentary feature | Currently in production
War with No Guns is a documentary about the world’s most successful peacekeeping mission, where peacekeepers used guitars instead of guns to bring lasting peace.
Las Fronteras - Director Malcolm Clarke
Documentary feature | Currently in post-production
Las Fronteras is a film about a couple choosing to go against the grain of city life and embrace the benefits of slowing down.
Sense of Sport - Director Creda Wilson
Documentary half hour | Currently in post-production
Sense of Sport is a set of intimate character studies about legally blind New Zealanders involved in sport.
