10 days of shows kick off this Thursday
The Cuba Quarter is the home of the Fringe this year, with BATS (Out of Site) and the Fringe Bar joined on Ghuznee St by the festival’s first independently managed venue, Gryphon Theatre. As Fringe Festival 2013 kicks off, Gryphon Theatre does too; the home of an ambitious and tightly packed ten day program that will see the Ghuznee Street theatre become one of the main hubs of the Fringe.
As well as hosting shows from all over NZ (and one from Australia!) the venue will feature a pop-up bar called The FatG, a playlist of local NZ music and a drinks list featuring some of Wellington’s favourite tipples - Tuatara, Durvillea Wines, and more! With drink specials for Fringe Addict and RadioActive card holders, board games for in between shows, and a programme full of improv, theatre, comedy and drama, Fringe Festival aficionados are in for a treat. All tickets can be booked through dashtickets.co.nz, and door sales may also be available (cash only!)
Shows on this week:
My Beautiful Disaster
14-17 Feb @ 6:30pm
A china-smashing story of fear, tea, disasters and freedom. Inspired by the works of Scandinavian authors, our show strongly relates to the earthquake experience of Christchurch residents. At times funny, at times frightening, it combines comedy, drama and physical theatre to tell the story of imaginary and real disasters, emotional liberation and re-birth.
Secrets
14-17 Feb @ 8pm
Funny, touching and authentic scenes are magically woven together before your eyes, inspired by true secrets anonymously shared by the audience.Brought to you by Wellington IMprov Troupe and visiting director Bobbi Block (Philadelphia)
The Green Room
15-17 Feb @ 9:30pm
The best improv group Wellington’s never seen - Improsaurus (Dunedin) presents a tounge-in-cheek look at theatresports in a long-form improvised comedy. This metatheatrical show is improv like you've never seen it before!
And next week:
Spider Dance
19-23 Feb @ 6:30pm
Beautiful ladies doing ugly things! Sharing the stories your Mama was afraid to tell you, and your Auntie Em tried to forget, these funny ladies expertly merge the delightful with the grotesque to celebrate the cheeky side of girl power, featuring improvisors from across the ditch (Melbourne)
Rageface
19-23 Feb @ 8pm
Written and directed by Adam Goodall (Deadlines), Rageface is an acerbic, blackly comic tale that interrogates how we deal, or don't deal, with the trials and responsibilities of the real world - the fronts we construct, the excuses we make, and what happens when those fronts and excuses get exposed and torn down.
A Cry Too Far From Heaven
20-23 Feb @ 9:30pm
A provocative play featuring two of New Zealand's historical figures, Minnie Dean, the "Winton Baby Farmer" and Victor Spencer, World War 1 deserter. As they face their last night on earth, prior to their executions, they examine what's brought them to this point. Coming from Invercargill by way of Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
