Future Animators is a youth initiative that supports secondary school students at Manurewa High School working in 3D animation. This year’s Future Animators showcase will be held at Nathan Homestead in Manurewa, allowing students to exhibit work on their home turf.

In the past the showcase has been held at Te Tuhi in Pakuranga, who partners with Manurewa High School to deliver the programme. The new location is an exciting development in Future Animator’s four year history.

“As Manurewa’s local arts centre, we are excited to partner with Te Tuhi and offer local students and whanau the opportunity to showcase their work in their local neighbourhood,” says Echo Janman, Facility Manager at Nathan Homestead.

“Featuring the outstanding talent at Manurewa High School in the Nathan Homestead gallery demonstrates the vision and creativity of our youth in a professional context in our community.”

Students enrolled in 3D animation at the high school participate in workshops and feedback sessions throughout their year of study. This continuous support gives students the confidence to present their work in a public space.

Rangituhia Hollis, Manurewa High School’s digital visual arts teacher says: "It shows them that there's not a great degree of difference between themselves and practising artists already working in this field." Hollis is also a visual artist working with digital animation which means students benefit from the guidance of someone already immersed in the creative sector.

Established in 2013, Future Animators has evolved into an exciting programme providing unique opportunities for students to share and develop their work. Students use an open source programme called Blender, as well as AfterEffects and Photoshop to develop their animation projects with complete artistic freedom. It is hoped that Future Animators will give students a taste for exploring creative career pathways.

Future Animators is a partnership between Te Tuhi and Manurewa High School. Supported by Auckland Council and Nathan Homestead.
