A new High Tech Youth Network studio is to be established in Penrose, Auckland.
The Government has announced $1.9 million in funding to enable the High Tech Youth Network to develop the new Auckland studio, and another in Dunedin.
The High Tech Youth Network Trust (formerly the Computer Clubhouse Trust) provides free after-school learning environments where young people work with adult volunteer mentors to explore their own ideas, increase their skills and develop belief in their own potential through the use of technology.
“This programme is an excellent example of community groups, government and the private sector working together to improve access to and uptake of digital technology,” said Community and Voluntary Sector Minister Jo Goodhew in her announcement.
There are currently five High Tech Youth Studios located in Otara, West Auckland, Hamilton, Whakatane and Hutt City. A site in Northland is also currently under development.
Grants from ASB Community Trust have been supporting the development of the High Tech Youth Network Trust's Auckland studios since 2006. Last year a $625,000 grant from the Trust helped the High Tech Youth Studios further develop their network.
Young people who attend the studios learn project management and technical skills such as computer game design, electronic publishing, Photoshop, animation, and 3D graphic design. Some sites provide free wireless internet connection to the surrounding community.
“I am excited by the objectives of the High Tech Youth Network Trust because they put young people at the centre and focus totally on helping them to become creative, confident, lifelong learners,” Mrs Goodhew said.
Maungakiekie MP Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga has also welcomed news of the new high tech studio in Penrose.
“This is great news for our local community. With a large number of schools and community groups in the area, I have no doubt the studio will be a great success.” Mr Lotu-Iiga says.
“In order to prepare our young people for work in the 21st century we need to give them every advantage we can to up-skill and unleash their potential. This is a great example of community groups, Government and the private sector all working together towards raising the achievement and success of our young learners.” Mr Lotu-Iiga says.
