Artist Statement
I find the responsiveness and ever-changing feel of clay spinning in my hands very meditative. This brings about a Zen-like inner peace for me. The whole process of using water, earth, and fire to create a sculptural and utilitarian piece is hugely rewarding.
The bowl form is most significant to me. My main goal is harmony of form and function, a big part of which is how each piece works aesthetically. What is also important to me is how the bowl relates to both architecture and containment.
My practice is based on faith as well as skill, an integration of hand and heart. Working at the wheel is where I most fully experience this. Additionally I thrive on the challenge of juggling the many variables of clay types, glaze, and firing processes.
My recent experimentation with glaze has resulted in a focus on ash as the base ingredient. By incorporating ash I am able to create organic glazes using an often discarded material, something which contributes to me living in a more ecologically sustainable way.
