Emerging Northland artist, Elektra Bakhshov's solo show titled Impressions of Europe, opens on Wednesday, March 8^th, 2017 at 4.30pm in the Shutter Room's newly decorated Gallery space (located in the Old Library, Rust Ave).

Alternative Photographic Process Artist, Elektra Bakhshov, specializes in creating 'cyanotypes'. This very old technique was first used for making 'blue prints' to produce copies of architectural and engineering designs up until the 1940's. This process, developed in 1842 by English scientist Sir John Herschel, is being used to create contemporary imagery by a worldwide group of dedicated Alternative Photographic Process Artists.

Bakhshov arrived in New Zealand in 2012 from Skiathos, Greece and commenced her studies at Northtec, under the excellent tuition of photography tutors Ellen Smith and Lisa Clunie. In 2016, accompanied by her partner John, she spent three months in Greece, where Bakhshov held a sellout solo exhibition on the island of Skiathos. The couple then embarked on a two-month long meander through an autumnal Europe, capturing exquisite photographic images along the way.

On her return to New Zealand Bakhshov had accumulated over 2,000 images. She rigorously selected thirty of the very best photographs to transform into the alluring blue and white cyanotypes for Impressions of Europe.

Elektra Bakhshov is an emerging artist who graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Arts (visual) from Northtec in 2015. Since graduating she has been a regular exhibitor at the Shutter Room and further afield and is very passionate about the cyanotype process.
