Inspiring Creative Spaces is an extraordinary fund-raising event for the Waikato Sculpture Trust: Eighteen selected visual artists, inspired by the Sculpture Park, worked on-site to produce a wide-range of paintings, prints, and drawings. These are available at a buy-now price or can be purchased at the Auction on the 9th March. For some artists this was their first contact with the Sculpture Park- and for the Trust it was a chance to give two dimensional visual artists the opportunity to interact with the Park. The response was quite overwhelming. As Sophia Minson put it:“My first walk around the 2km track took me into a huge tree-lined quarry that acts as a natural amphitheatre and has a lake below, abundant with water lilies. This was to be my spectacular painting site for the day. Sitting in the carved-out area enhanced the feeling of being small and occupying an in-between space such as in Maori legend, with the great sky father Ranginui above and earth mother Papatuanuku below.” Interpretations of the Park range from watercolour and acrylic landscape views to abstractions including representations of the confiscation line that forms a boundary of the site and stretches all the way to Mt. Te Aroha. Every exhibition is surrounded with great excitement, hard work and long hours for everyone involved- and always you are surprised, delighted and humbled in the presence of artists who go the extra mile - investing time, material, help and encouragement along the way. This exhibition is no exception! The auction of 50 works includes both paintings and sculpture. Pop in for a complementary tea or coffee during the next two weeks. There is free entry to the auction and exhibition site only. An entry fee, to visit the current sculpture exhibition in the Park, SUMMER” Utopia into Dystopia still applies.
