Doc Edge 2019 prepares for its opening later this month with an incredible line up of over 30 international filmmakers and industry guests in attendance. The Festival is also proud to honour legendary filmmaker Heddy Honigmann as the recipient of the highly esteemed 2019 Doc Edge Superhero award.

The Doc Edge Superhero Award recognises a recipient’s outstanding contribution made to the documentary industry. Honigmann is the latest recipient of the award following Diane Weyermann of Participant Media; Chris McDonald, the President of Hot Docs Canada; Ally Derks former founder of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, US consummate filmmaker Steve James, and Kiwi filmmakers Leanne Pooley and Dame Gaylene Preston.

Peruvian born Honigmann‘s work has been honoured widely with retrospectives at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and also at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. She has won major awards at film festivals around the world. Her films include Around the World in 50 Concerts (2014), IDFA Opening film El Olvido (2008), Forever (2006), Dame la Mano (2003), Good Husband, Dear Son (2001), Food for Love (2000), Crazy (1999), The Underground Orchestra (1998), Two Minutes of Silence, Please (1997), O Amor Natural (1996), Au Revoir (1995), Metal and Melancholy (1992), Mind Shadows (1987). Her latest film Buddy (2018) is screening at Doc Edge Festival 2019.

Doc Edge Executive Director Dan Shanan says, “It is both a privilege and honour to be able to celebrate a legend of documentary. Honigmann exemplifies brilliance, compassion, accomplishment and inspiration all at once in her work. The world is blessed with the taonga (treasure) she creates”.

The Award will be presented by Doc Edge Ambassador Judy Bailey at the Doc Edge Film Awards in Auckland on 31 May 2019.

In addition, with support from the Franco-German Cultural Fund, the French Embassy and the Goethe-Institut, this year's Festival brings German and French productions and film industry professionals to New Zealand to build connections with local filmmakers and to explore co-production opportunities.
