Whiti Whitiahua Wahine: Maori Women Film-Makers Waiheke Matariki Maori Women’s Film Festival 2012 July 6 – 8 – Waiheke Island Community Cinema Kia hiwa ra!

A feast of film to warm the heart, mind and soul is being presented at Waiheke Cinema especially for Matariki. Nga Aho Whakaari in association with Women in Film and Television, Auckland City Council and the Tamaki Makaurau Matariki Festival Trust Board join forces with Waiheke locals in this insightful and eclectic presentation of films made by women filmmakers. Friday 6 July at the opening mihi at 7pm we have esteemed Maori Kuia, Vapi Kupenga representing the work of pioneering NZ filmmaker, Ramai Hayward. Wanjiku Sanderson will present the film “Kekidee Aroha” and we honour the work of veteran filmmaker, the late Merata Mita. Huia Kapua and her team from the Wellington NZ Film Archive have curated this programme especially for this evening. Screening starts at 8pm. Saturday 7 July This evening we see the next wave of filmmakers, with the Maori language short ‘Taku Rakau’ directed by Kararaina Rangihau, ‘ Winter Boy ‘ directed by Rachel House and produced by Hineani Melbourne and the short ‘Ebony Society’ directed by Tammi Davis and produced by Chelsea Winstanley and Ainsley Gardiner. Screening startsat 5pm. Sunday 8 July The last but certainly the most talked about series on Maori television this season, ‘Songs from the Inside’ directed by Julian Arahanga and produced by Maramena Roderick.
