Organisers of 2018 Molly Morpeth Canaday Award 3D have counted all votes and are thrilled to announce the winner of the Law Creative People’s Choice Award.  The 2018 recipient of the $500 award is Symbiosis – Wind, Water, Earth by Hawke’s Bay based artist Chika Kishimoto Lindsay.

The People’s Choice Award is a longstanding feature of the Molly Morpeth Canaday Awards and provides an opportunity for members of the public to have their say. Sponsor Brendon Law of Law Creative Group says, “As supporters of art and creative processes, we are so excited to be able to present this final award and recognise a work that has obviously resonated with so many gallery visitors.”

Kishimoto Lindsay’s delicate work received the highest number of votes from visitors to the Molly Morpeth Canaday 3D exhibition. It is comprised of three sculptural elements made of bamboo, waxed linen cord, bead thread, and vellum suspended from the ceiling.  They have a sense of lightness and a quiet liveliness to them, qualities that are enhanced by the moving shadows cast by the forms on the wall of the gallery space.

“The working process of these sculptures took me on a journey and deepened my understanding of the nature of the materials,” said the artist. “My devotion to these creations enabled me to explore the energetic forms of wind, water, and earth, through the physical forms of my sculpture. I am grateful for those who supported me during the process, especially my family. I will humbly receive the award”.

Symbiosis – Wind, Water, Earth can be viewed in the galleries at Te Kōputu a te whanga a Toi - Whakatāne Library and Exhibition Centre until the exhibition closes on Sunday 8 April at 2:00 pm. Interested art collectors and buyers should note that all works in the 2018 Molly Morpeth Canaday Award 3D are now available for purchase, with select works available for tender from this Saturday 31 March. Enquiries and tender bids can be made at the front desk of Te Kōputu during opening hours (Monday – Friday 9:00am – 5:00 pm, Saturday – Sunday 10:00am – 2:00pm, closed Easter Friday and Monday) or by sending an email to arts@whakatane.govt.nz.
