CARTERTON DISTRICT MUSIC FELLOWSHIP 2020

New Zealand Pacific Studio Artist Residency Programme invites applications from creative practitioners working in music for the Carterton District Music Fellowship in Wairarapa, New Zealand.

Open to NZ-based artists only.

Emerging and established practitioners are welcomed to apply.

The three-week opportunity must be taken up before 30 Nov 2020.

The Carterton District Music Fellowship provides:

- Time and space to devote to one’s creative practice

- 3 weeks accommodation (valued at $1260) with a host in Wairarapa

- Support to collaborate with local musicians / groups in Wairarapa

- Performance opportunity at Carterton Events Centre with local musicians, for which NZ Pacific Studio will hire venue / gear / sound system

- Project management support

Note: The Fellowship  is self-catering – artists provide for their own meals. Artists also arrange their own transportation to / from Wairarapa.

BACKGROUND

Founded in 2001, NZ Pacific Studio is an award-winning international residency programme that has welcomed hundreds of creative practitioners from around the world. It is a charity organisation and it is through donations/funding from the local Wairarapa community that we can offer Fellowship opportunities. Our Fellowships have related to poetry, writing, music, and war/peace/ANZAC issues, and have been in partnership with museums, councils, NGOs and philanthropists.

The Carterton District Music Fellowship 2020 is made possible with support from the Carterton District Creative Communities Scheme and the Cross Creek Blues Club and comes with the mandate that the Fellow engage with residents of Carterton and nearby communities.

Commitment to one’s practice; ability to work independently; leadership skills; a desire to connect with a wider audience and community; demonstrated skills/experience in public outreach; open-mindedness; and friendliness to be able to engage with a range of people.

Selection

Selection will be based on the nature, strength, uniqueness and clarity of the proposed project, and the degree to which all parties would benefit: the creative practitioner, NZ Pacific Studio, and the Carterton community.

The initial sponsors of the Music Fellowship were Dr Rob Maunsell and Keith Hunt.  

2017 Music Fellow - Aldo Pinelli, from Argentina, is an award-winning singer and composer who has released six albums. He studied music at Conservatorio H. Costa, and psychology at Universidad Argentina John F. Kennedy in Buenos Aires.

During his Fellowship, he performed at the 2017 Kokomai Creative Festival and at the BLOCK PARTY - both concerts were held at Aratoi Museum. He also worked on his composition, 'Night Forest'.

2015 - Inaugural Music Fellow - Jona Byron, from Australia.  A musician and filmmaker based in Melbourne, during his fellowship, Byron composed five songs and performed at two house concerts in Masterton.
