NZ Pacific Studio – Art about Horses and other Opportunities

NZ Pacific Studio is offering at least five Fellowships in 2020. The application deadline for the first Fellowship is 22 January 2020, so be quick.

The international artists’ residency programme is now welcoming applications for its 2020 ANZAC Bridge Fellowship, a 3-week residential opportunity in April which focuses on the ANZAC Bridge at Kaiparoro/Mount Bruce, the Mounted Rifles, and the horses that went to war. 

This Fellowship period runs from approximately 5 to 26 April 2020 and includes participation in the afternoon memorial service on ANZAC Day, 25 April 2020, at the Kaiparoro Bridge, an historical and unique landmark. The Fellow provides a rich cultural context for these annual commemorations, which in 2020 the ANZAC Mounted Troopers will also attend.

Creative practitioners - emerging or established, from Wairarapa or elsewhere, and working in any media/genre -  are invited to make a project proposal that involves the participation of the nearby Tararua and Wairarapa communities, such as Kaiparoro Mount Bruce, Eketahuna, Mauriceville, Rongokokako, Nireaha and Whakaoriori Masterton.

Accommodation will be provided for three weeks at Whakahirihiri, a modern private home in Kaiparoro Mount Bruce. Whakahirihiri is close to ANZAC Memorial Bridge and Pūkaha, the national wildlife centre. The property looks out onto native bush and has bush/rural walking tracks.

The Fellowship provides accommodation; up to $500 to support project costs; Project management support and assistance to link with local communities; Complimentary transportation from/to Masterton rail or bus terminus; and a car is available for limited local travel.

The ANZAC Bridge Fellowship has been offered annually since 2006. Previous ANZAC Bridge Fellows include Karen Wrigglesworth (Whanganui), Rebecca Holden (Wellington), Christine Yardley (Australia), Philippa Werry (Wellington), Connah Podmore (Wellington) and Anna Borrie (Fiordland). 

This opportunity is co-presented with the Friends of the ANZAC Memorial Bridge Kaiparoro and made possible with a community grant from Trust House Community Enterprise, Masterton. 

NZ Pacific Studio has welcomed about 500 visiting creative practitioners from around Aotearoa and the world since 2001. In recognition of its "outstanding contribution” to the community, NZ Pacific Studio received a 2018 Trustpower Community Award.  Run by volunteers, the programme offers year-round self-funded residencies and about five to seven fellowships each year, with support from Masterton District Council, Tararua District Council, Carterton Creative Communities, and philanthropists.

NZ Pacific Studio currently seeks volunteers to assist with activities with the visiting artists. The charity also seeks support for sponsoring fellowships, such as annual support for an emerging artist.
