'Paper Cuts,’ an exhibition of selected work by Dunedin artists Peter Lewis, Sam Ovens and Andy McCready opens at Bruce Studio Project Space (2nd floor, 127 Stuart Street) on Friday 18th October at 5.30pm. The show runs until Wednesday 23rd October, from 12pm to 6pm weekdays, and 12pm to 4pm in the weekend.
Featuring new and recent works across a range of media, the exhibition title highlights the use of paper as a material central to the practice of all three artists: the cut and paste surrealism of Peter Lewis’ collages; Andy McCready’s painted portraits on vintage wallpaper; and Sam Ovens’ screen-printed record covers. Paper is folded, marked, sliced and reconfigured to create new visual expressions that range from the whimsical to the downright defiant.
“Although our techniques and styles differ, the works do interact really well together – aside from utilising paper, they also share a lowbrow or pop sensibility, with vibrant colouring and a quirky, tongue-in-cheek approach," says Andy.
‘Paper Cuts’ is among the first shows to be held at the recently established Bruce Studio, an intimately sized yet innovative project space set up by a collective of artists based in Allbell Chambers on Lower Stuart Street.
“Bruce wants to provide emerging artists with an accessible space to show their work as well as a place for established artists to keep their art practice moving, and for artists to try out new or different avenues of art making that may not necessarily show in other galleries” explains Bruce co-director Greg Thomas. “The space is rent free and commission free, with an emphasis on the artist(s) taking the initiative for advertising, installation and opening night hospitality.”
‘Paper Cuts’ is kindly sponsored by Green Man Brewery and Phantom Billstickers Ltd.
