Repugnant: exploring gay conversion therapy. Since her husband left, Grace has poured her heart and soul into curing gay dogs of their homosexuality.

Grace runs an underground pray-away-the-gay service for dogs booked in by their concerned owners. But her life’s purpose becomes unstuck with the arrival of a new client, an adorable pug named Fergis. He steals her heart, getting closer to her than anyone has in years.

Grace’s conversion therapy is not working and she’s teetering on the edge of sanity. How can she go on in a world in which she cannot change those she holds dearest? Repugnant is a comedic satire of the ideas behind gay conversion therapy, while reserving sympathy for Grace as she struggles to reconcile her beliefs with her feelings.

It poses the question: If you wouldn’t do it to your dog, why would you do it to your child?”. Repugnant is one of the Someday Stories series of sustainability-focused short films by emerging film-makers of Aotearoa New Zealand.
