Summer Shakespeare presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Shane Bosher.

13 - 29 Feb

Love turns the world upside down. Clothes and social skins are shed, nice people turn nasty and imaginations run riot.

Summer Shakespeare is excited to present this work, a love letter and a cheeky wink to Wellington's art culture, built by a team of talented and passionate theatre makers.

Expect ferociously beautiful poetry, robust physicality, anarchic invention and a donkey, as Shakespeare’s oh-so-magical play is brought to life this summer.

This year we bring Summer Shakespeare indoors to

The Basement Theatre, Te Whaea National Dance and Drama Centre

11 Hutchison Road, Newtown, Wellington.

Bring your playful selves, and be prepared for a theatre experience like no other. With our very own Mocktail Bar!

Shane Bosher, Director of A Midsummer Night's Dream-

"I've always been struck by how this play connects with audiences, regardless of age or experience. The language is accessible and there is a great spirit of democracy in the storytelling - we jump from lovers to fairies to mechanicals to royals. We're in the midst of rehearsal - Australia is burning and Trump is continuing his crimes against humanity. We need theatre to tell us that we are not alone, that there is possibility in the world. Dream does exactly that."

In regards to our fabulous pop up venue for this year, Shane explains "We're doing something kinda different this year. We've decided to take Summer Shakespeare indoors for the first time since 1989! We'll be performing in the Basement Theatre at Te Whaea. As an organisation, Summer Shakespeare has constantly reinterpreted its relationship to space - jumping from Te Ngākau Civic Square to The Dell to the carpark of a cinema complex. This space allows us to focus the storytelling, avoid pesky wet weather cancellations and create a rambunctious spirit of play between actor and audience."

"We're creating a Dream that speaks to community, inclusivity, gender expression, sexuality, agency and is underpinned by physical bravura and a love of language. I want to say to the audience let's embrace the play's conflict between imagination and reason. Let's believe in fairies, let's believe in possibility. I reckon Wellington is gonna love it."
