American Film Market, Santa Monica, CA. International sales agency CineTel Films have acquired the action/thriller The Cure, written produced and directed by visual effects guru David Gould.
CineTel have been selling films internationally for over thirty years, while president and CEO Paul Hertzberg has produced and distributed more than 100 features and is also chairman of the Independent Film & Television Associations (IFTA) which organizes the American Film Market each year.
Hertzberg says, "We were blown away by The Cure, both in terms of the strong acting and also the production values. We are very excited to be selling the film and the response from the marketplace has been overwhelmingly positive with several sales already underway. We're very optimistic that the film will perform beyond everyone's expectations."
The Cure follows Beth (Antonia Prebble), a young, female scientist who discovers that the pharma-ceutical company she works for had developed a cure for cancer years earlier. She attempts to release it to the world, unaware that the company will stop at nothing to prevent her. Daniel Lissing, who stars as James King in Shawn Ryan's ABC TV series Last Resort, plays her partner Ryan.
The film's creator David Gould handled visual effects at WETA Digital on such films as The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Return of the King, King Kong, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and TinTin: The Secret of The Unicorn, while his recent short film, Awaken earned him Best Director and Best New Film at the 2011 Australian Screen Industry Awards.
"We were in a very fortunate position that several sales agents wanted to represent the film, but ultimately we chose CineTel because of their depth and breadth of experience. They not only have a great reputation in the marketplace, but are also active film producers themselves, so they have their finger on the pulse as to what the market wants. We look forward to a fruitful relationship for not only this film, but future projects," says Gould.
CineTel are closing sales on four territories including Spain, Germany, Russia, and the Czech Republic. Further sales are expected before the close of AFM on November 7th.
