The Legato Art Exhibition in Cassino, Italy  - May 2014

The 70th commemoration of the Battles of Cassino.

Artists throughout New Zealand are invited to submit an application to participate in this exhibition.

Legato is now an established part of the annual WW2 Battles of Cassino commemorations held in Cassino, Italy in May each year. The 70th commemorations will be a special time with surviving veterans, international dignitaries and families of veterans participating as well as the local Italian people who are committed to remembering and honouring the people who were there during WW2.

In May 2014 there will be many more visitors to Cassino than usual as the veterans, now in their nineties, come to honour their fallen companions one last time. To help make this occasion a particularly memorable one Legato is taking the messages of peace and commemoration to more than one venue in Cassino. There will be a strong NZ flavour to the commemorations, and you are invited to contribute to that.

Legato is a cultural exchange that offers opportunities for professional development, international exhibition experience, networking, and a chance to research and understand more of our own history. This research has multiple benefits, not the least being that artists contributing to Legato have consistently taken their work to a higher level, seeking new ways to express themselves as they become involved in the stories of family and communities. Art works are exhibited in Cassino for two weeks as a part of the commemorative programme and the exhibition will be well advertised in the region and online.

The legacy of war is part of our common heritage. It is our task to make lasting peace the focus of that heritage. Together as artists, social commentators and cultural ambassadors we can educate for a culture of peace, and honour those who gave their lives for our freedom, using art as an international language.
