THE WALL comes to Auckland Fringe Festival 2020

A kaleidoscopic tale about the migrant experience and reactions to migration.

March 3th to 7th 2019, 7:30 pm. TAPAC, 100 Motions Road, Auckland (Tickets $ 20)

Babel Theatre and TAPAC present The Wall, an original, devised production based on real stories that opens questions about identity, unconscious bias and the state of the world.

The play is inspired by recent events and the state of the world, like the Migrant Caravan at the borders of Mexico. It explores migrant experience around the world, including Aotearoa, and the response to that migration. Hate speech, fear of difference, colonialism, are not new, but they have reappeared and become more visible

The plot: A writer is conflicted about the necessity of writing about matters she felt were in the past. She decides to tell us a tale, about a timeless, imaginary country that decides to protect itself from the outside, building a wall under the threat of losing its identity and precious way of life. The tale becomes a reflection of the actual state of the world.

Babel Theatre is a collective of performers and theatre practitioners who use cultural diversity as a creative tool. Through sharing their personal cultural identities, Babel's members are committed to creating unique collective stories that ask questions about the world that we live in. The Wall is written by Mallika Krishnamurthy and Daniel Fernandez, with the collaboration of Ahi Karunaharan as dramaturge, in association with Agaram Productions.

Collaborating with migrant communities, Babel Theatre has gathered real stories about migrant experience from many angles. Told with a sense of humour, The Wall aims to bring communities together, not separate them. In a sensorial way, the play explores the effects of the walls that we create within ourselves and around us. The result of this is a cast of 25 actors and 2 musicians, representing all sides of the world, bringing this devised piece to life, where magic realism, a touch of Brecht’s epic theatre and flavours from all around the world will captivate the senses of the audience.

The Wall is proudly sponsored by The Stout Trust, administered by Perpetual Guardian, and The Office of Ethnic Communities.

About BABEL THEATRE: Cultural diversity as a creative tool.

Babel Theatre is a collaborative company created in 2017 (Auckland) that promotes the use of cultural diversity as a creative tool. The company intertwines a variety of backgrounds and skills, like physical theatre, music, and circus, to create stories that ask questions about the world we live in.

New Zealand is a very diverse land, but we believe that to achieve true diversity, where all cultures can live in harmony and mutual understanding, we need to share stories and give visibility to those voices that are not normally heard. We want to put performing arts at the service of social cohesion of our diverse society.

Contributors to The Wall  come from: Aotearoa, India, Spain, Greece, Croatia, Israel, Brazil, Argentina, France, Japan, Russia, Iran, UK, EEUU, Uruguay, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Vanuatu and Sri Lanka.
