It also tells of the bigger picture of settlement here. The ancient sea trails of the ancestors from within the Pacific Basin is shared as well as the subsequent trails of exploration within these lands, how they brought the kumara here and nurtured it until they discovered ways of growing the precious vegetable here. The story of the sacred stone of Pounamu and the important relationship of this peace stone and Ruaumoko sometimes referred to as the earthquake god is included. Ancestral names of these ancient trails are recorded in our land. Whispers of Waitaha is the Grandmother stories. And as they are the stories of the Grandmothers they tell of the ways they conveyed the wisdom and the teachings of the culture to their precious grandchildren so that the culture goes forward into the future in tact. Stories, songs and karakia record birthing ceremonials of the mokopuna and the important link between grandparent and grandchild. Songs and stories and karakia for the ancient sea trails are also in this taonga including the names of some of the crew of one group who sailed from the other side of the Pacific to these shores and the reasons why. It also follows the journey of the ancestor grandmothers through the land to select special places for specific reasons. And much much more. The Artworks included in this exhibition are from several series from the 2004 Kowhai, 2003 Tangaroa, 1996 Onamata Uenuku Moemoe?. All honour the ancient stories & teachings of the Waitaha people.
