Two young filmmakers have made a documentary inspired by a local news article about preserving garments from the mid-1800s.

Director, Nicole van Heerden, and producer, Karalisa Dantas, were intrigued by the discovery of these items which include a 150 year old dress. They approached the Howick Historical Village in September last year to make a documentary following the Village volunteers preserve, catalogue, and record the origins of the items in their textile collection.

The film features collections manager Debra Kane and volunteers, Pam Taylor, Judy Wilson, and Janette Claridge. Nicole says, “I think it’s important to raise the status of local history in our community – there are so many great stories to be told, and Howick in particular has such a wonderfully rich history. So much of it has been preserved for us to see and experience today thanks to the work of volunteers like the ‘Textile Ladies’.

With financial support from Auckland Council’s Creative Communities scheme and local retirement village Metlifecare Highlands, the girls have produced a 24 minute documentary titled Forgotten Dresses. Karalisa says, “We felt there was a need to showcase these dresses and the stories that lie behind them because they are a part of our local history. We’re fortunate that local organisations have come on board to support this.”

Forgotten Dresses is a glimpse behind the scenes of Howick Historical Village's 19th century clothing, their stories, the challenges, and the people who preserved the collection.

The documentary premieres at Metlifecare Highlands at 3pm on October 4th. Call Adelina on 09 533 0610 to book a seat at the premiere.

The premiere is followed by screenings at Botany Library on October 5th, at 1pm and 7pm, and on October 6th at 2pm, as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival. Call Leigh on 272 0010 to book a seat at an Auckland Heritage Festival screening.

All screenings are free but bookings are necessary.
