New Zealand’s newest cartoon animated short film THE RANGIMOEKAUS will screen for the first time in Auckland this week at Corban Estate Arts Centre.

Creator of THE RANGIMOEKAUS Helena Bethune says, “It has been a 5 year journey to make the film and it’s cool that Aucklanders will get to see this piece of Maori magic.”

THE RANGIMOEKAUS is New Zealand’s first 3D Maori animated short film. It brings to life hard case Kiwi humour and Maori humour in cartoon animation.

“First there was BroTown and now this is GirlTown!” says Ms Bethune.

Animation Director of BroTown Maka Makatoa says, "After being involved in the initial development of The Rangimoekaus it's great to see it coming along with great results and greater potential to do well.”

The Rangimoekaus has a positive smoke free message to rangatahi (teens) which is shown through edgy storylines, and hard case humour that is relevant to youth today.

Audience members will be treated to a line up of 7 Maori films as part of the KIA ORA SHORTS programme curated by Leo Koziol of the Wairoa Maori film festival.

Auckland based lead actor Monique Bradley who voiced Nanny Rangimoekaus and the brainy cuzzie Hinewehi says, “The Rangimoekaus achieved a life-long dream of mine as a voice artist for animation and I loved being able to embrace my Maori culture in a humorous way.”

The Rangimoekaus is also set to screen in Sydney 21 August and Brisbane 28 August as part of the KIA ORA SHORTS programme and Tahiti in 2015.

The short film was made possible through Yoobee School of Design and Te Wananga O Aotearoa and 30 production crew.

Screenings of THE RANGIMOEKAUS in Auckland are on Thursday 10 July and Friday 11 July at 7.30pm at Corban Estate Arts Centre.
