Northern Dance Network presents the fourth ASPiRE dance show for seniors by seniors on Saturday, 1st October to celebrate the International Day of the Older Person.  Funded by Creative New Zealand with the support of the Raye Freedman Arts Centre, the beloved and popular annual dance showcase has moved to a new Auckland location for 2022, due to overwhelming audience numbers at previous performances.

This year, dance groups will perform a mix of genres including jazz, contemporary, folk, ballroom and more. ASPiRE dancers range in age from 60s, 70s to even 80s! Older people benefit enormously from dancing which improves balance, joint mobility, muscle strength and helps mitigate falls.

Co-curator and Producer of the show and current Chair of NDN, Susan Jordan has had a long career as a professional dancer and choreographer. She began ASPiRE because she saw a gap in how society treats elders.

“We encourage young people to aspire, to be ambitious, but we seldom apply this to seniors. Our dance showcase celebrates creative ageing and the joy of dance. You are never too old to dance!”

Creative ageing is the active participation in creative art practices such as writing, storytelling, visual arts, music, and dance. The aim of ASPiRE is to encourage seniors to put on their dancing shoes and join a class or club. In 2010, Susan established SeniorsDANCE, regular classes to keep seniors active and enjoying life. Aimed at people 60 years and older who are able to attend unaided, the classes are taught by professional teachers and enhance physical, mental, and social well-being.
