ANG SININANG BULAWAN
(THE GOLDEN DRESS)

In pre-colonial Philippines, queerness
was seen as sacred, with those
embodying both masculine and feminine
energies were allowed into the Babaylan,
a matriarchy of spiritual leaders.
Despite the enforcement of Christianity
by invading colonial forces, this sacred
bond evolved and transformed instead
of disappearing. Today, in Philippine
Folk-Catholicism, queer individuals
craft elaborate religious regalia, revered
alongside the idols they adorn.
Curated by Marc Conaco, this exhibition
pays tribute to the divinity of queer
ancestors. Fashion designer Dennis
Sayat and digital artist Mariadelle
Gamit create wearable art infused with
divine spirit, honouring a rich legacy of
spirituality, creativity, and fabulousness.
