Join us for a conversation between Reclaimed Land: Tāngata, Tiriti, Taiao curators Israel Randell and Susan Ballard.

Israel is a multidisciplinary artist, curator, and educator whose practice is grounded in Indigenous futurisms, spatial storytelling, and whakapapa. Her work often takes the form of installation, writing, and performance — exploring the relationships between time, place, and identity through a distinctly Māori lens.

Susan Ballard is an art writer, curator and professor of art history and environmental humanities at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington. She is currently working on a new book tracing an environmental art history of Aotearoa New Zealand, to be published in 2027.

Access information: The New Zealand Portrait Gallery is an accessible venue, all on one level. There is an accessible wharepaku (toilet) at the back of the venue. The gallery has automatic sliding doors and glass doors that can be pushed or pulled to enter. We have a wheelchair available for use within the gallery, and there is low stool seating throughout. You can find more accessibility information here. If you have any questions regarding accessibility or if there is something we could do to make your visit easier, please get in touch.
