Summer is a new exhibition of recent figurative works from well-known Waiheke artist Grant Finch.  Finch creates vivid impasto-textured beachscapes with confident palette-knife strokes.

"..I enjoy the process of painting, especially when the painting begins to coalesce. I begin with a lot of colour on my canvas and gradually tease out the image that presents itself. It may not necessarily be the exact image I set out to paint, but the process of capturing a 3D mood or moment in a 2D medium is always a little magical. In these paintings I have tried to capture sun, summer and water the elements that best express Waiheke at this time of year...." - Grant

BIOGRAPHY

"..I have spent my working life in art/design related pursuits. In the 70’s and 80’s I designed, manufactured and retailed leather products in areas as diverse as leathercrafts, souvenirs, furniture, footwear and fashion. In the early 80’s I also edited the NZ Craft Council magazine. In the 90’s I created a steel/wrought iron business and as before sold these products throughout NZ. All through this period I also exhibited mixed media works in sculpted leather, steel and paint.

Following a move to Auckland in the late 90’s I began a design and project management company specializing in retail interiors. Since 2009 I have been mainly painting using a variety of mediums as I find it limiting to stay with one genre or method. I find subject matter from all over and could count too many influences to elaborate!"
