This whakatauki (proverb) is said of a person who is awake and alert at night.

As part of this years Kiingi Tuheitia Portraiture Award Exhibition nau mai haere mai, you are welcome to attend a special Matariki raranga (weaving) celebratory hands-on workshop. Led by Frank Topia (Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Haua) with Linda Lee (Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga, Ngāti Huia, Ngāti Kurī, Ngāi Tākoto, Te Rarawa, Te Aupōri, Ngāpuhi).

 

Starting with tikanga and then making whetū (stars) to celebrate Matariki. You will walk away with woven taonga at the end of the class.

 

No experience is necessary and all materials are provided.

Please arrive on time for karakia (blessing).

 

Light refreshments will be provided.

 

Children should be over 10 to take part, please. Any children under 14 should be accompanied by an adult with a ticket.

Accessibility Information: The New Zealand Portrait Gallery is an accessible venue, all on one level. There is an accessible wharepaku at the back of the venue. The gallery has automatic sliding doors and glass doors that can be pushed or pulled to enter. We have a wheelchair available for use within the gallery, and there is low stool seating throughout.
