THE EPHEMERAL NATURE OF IMPERMANENCE

AKIKO DIEGEL

This work explores the fleeting nature of
life and beauty through the symbolism
of butterflies, which represent
transformation and the brief moments of
human experience. Their life cycle—from
caterpillar to chrysalis to vibrant winged
creature—metaphorically illustrates
personal growth and impermanence. In
Japan, butterflies are sacred messengers
linked to spiritual beliefs, highlighting
reverence for nature. They embody the
concept of “wabi-sabi,” celebrating
beauty in imperfection and transience.
Using origami with recycled wallpaper
evokes nostalgia and reflects on personal
metamorphosis, reminding us of our
deep connection to nature and the
ongoing cycle of life.
