Muse is excited to present two exhibitions opening Friday 5 September: Portrait of the Artist by Tom Armstrong and The Land that Speaks by Nick Wilkey. Both artists are rapidly gaining attention. Armstrong’s work captivates with its mix of the bizarre, the ridiculous, and gentle humour, while Wilkey brings a poetic sensibility rarely seen in someone so young. Armstrong, who studied in Dunedin in the 1980s, lives quietly in Central Hawke’s Bay, creating imaginative paintings framed in whimsical surrounds that reflect his love of art, literature, popular culture, and personal stories.
Wilkey, born in England and raised in Hawke’s Bay, explores memory, myth, and the sacred presence of the land in his paintings. While his architectural training informs some of his work, most of it goes beyond structure, offering glimpses of whenua as a living archive where history, cosmology, and personal stories meet. His paintings transform the familiar into something otherworldly, inviting viewers to reflect and find their own meaning.
