Join Ngā Tai O Te Awa’s Whakaritia O Mātauranga Māori Group at the Sarjeant Gallery as we bring together quilting traditions and creative design. Explore how fabric and design can carry stories of identity, culture, and connection while viewing completed works and contributing to a collective artwork inspired by the visual traditions of the South Pacific.

11am – Interactive Studio Hour
Where patterns begin and stories take shape. Watch quilt-making in progress, and discover how the first step in South Pacific traditions — from tivaevae to tifaifai to Hawaiian quilts — begins with designing a meaningful pattern. Create your own paper motif inspired by these practices and add it to a collective design.

2pm – Shared Threads
Where creativity, culture, and whakapapa meet. See the morning’s paper motifs come together in a collective artwork inspired by South Pacific quilt traditions. Add your piece and be part of a growing story shaped by many hands.
