The Hynds Foundation, in collaboration with Gillies MetalTech Foundry, seeks to support artists to advance their creative practices through a unique residency located within the Historic Precinct of Ōamaru, and in an industrial context.

The 12-week residency runs from 1 September to 23 November 2025, and provides the artist resident with an opportunity to:

  • Develop their creative practices, independently or in collaborations between artists, and the skilled craftsmen we have here at Gillies.
  • Connect with the vibrant local arts community through the experience.
  • Develop new work with opportunity for an Open Studio at the culmination of the residency.

The artist will have a studio space within the Crucible Art Studios. In addition, the residency offers:

  • a stipend of $650 per week and accommodation for a 12-week residency.
  • access to 20 hours of foundry technician support at no cost to the artist.
  • potential to cast work in iron using the sand-casting technique.
  • opportunity for connection with the local arts community.
  • opportunity to share work created through an Open Studio format or use of adjacent Crucible Gallery spaces.

The 2025 Crucible Artist Residency is open for applications from 24 April to 22 May.
