About the role:
The Arts and Events Broker is an independent contractor who is funded by the Puketāpapa Local Board. They administer a fund for community-led, place-based arts projects on behalf of the local board. They promote arts, culture, and creativity locally and provide support and advice to local individuals, groups, and communities seeking to generate creative and cultural activity.
The Arts and Events Broker is a local expert. They should hold knowledge about the arts in general, both regionally and nationally, but their primary focus is the arts and community within their geographic area. Their focus will be on nurturing a thriving, self-sustaining arts and culture environment, one that fosters genuine community ownership, strengthens social infrastructure, enhances the unique cultural identity of Puketāpapa, and contributes to the long-term social, cultural, and economic prosperity of the area.
Using a community approach that is intergenerational, intercultural, inclusive, and impactful, the Arts and Events broker will balance global perspectives with hyperlocal priorities. Collaboration with local partners is essential to ensure initiatives are culturally relevant, build trust, foster social cohesion, and leave a lasting legacy for the community.
The programme of work developed by the arts broker will encompass delivery across the Puketāpapa Local Board area; engage with and reflect the diversity of the area; activate existing public spaces and venues; demonstrate partnership with local community organisations and groups; and include a diverse range of art forms. It is constructed with reference to the Puketāpapa Local Board Plan 2023 and Toi Whītiki - Auckland Council’s Arts and Culture Strategic Action Plan.
Required skills and experience (some can be mentored):
Skills | Experience |
Community Engagement | Experience in community-based work or demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships. |
Cultural Competency | Experience working with culturally diverse communities. Responsiveness to Te Ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Knowledge of language(s) spoken by Puketāpapa diverse communities is desired. |
Project Management and Funding | Work strategically, develop a work programme, manage budgets, write and present reports. Work independently, make decisions, and give advice. Knowledge on funding bodies and success in grant applications. |
Arts Delivery and Knowledge | Experience in creative programme delivery and/or creative sector involvement and knowledge. |
Local Knowledge | Have a connection to or an awareness of community needs and themes. |
Budget:
The Arts and Events Broker will have an allocation of $50,000 to fund their contracted hours. A further Project Fund of $66,000 and an Administration Fund of $4,000 has been allocated to support and deliver a programme of arts and cultural activity.
The successful candidate will be required to hold public liability insurance up with 2 million in cover.
