What is it?

Make It Nelson is a curated programme of hands-on activities running throughout June 2026. It’s a chance for everyone to try different types of making, learn practical skills, and spend time creating with others. Sessions are led by experienced Nelson-based artists and creatives.

Most workshops will be beginner friendly, with options ranging from half-day and full-day sessions to longer courses.

What are we looking for?

We will consider all types of creative making workshops, and more. Traditional crafts associated with Nelson such as pottery, jewellery and textile making can sit alongside beer making, motorcycle maintenance and techniques like 3D printing and game design.

How does it work?

Make It Nelson is delivered through a partnership between Arts Council Nelson and the artists and creatives running activities – the Activity Hosts. We work together under the ‘Make It Nelson’ brand.

The ACN team will:

  • Manage the overall programme
  • Market the event as a whole
  • Set up and manage the website and ticketing
  • Provide satellite events, facilities and advice

Activity Hosts will:

  • Design and organise their workshops
  • Provide tools, materials and consumables
  • Provide or book their venue
  • Host participants

For 2026 there is no registration fee and Activity Hosts receive 100% of ticket sales made through the Make It Nelson website.

How do I get involved?

If you are an artist or a creative and interested in running a workshop, read through the Essential Information for Activity Providers (PDF download) and submit an application through the link on our website - www.makeitnelson.co.nz.

Make It Nelson is produced by Arts Council Nelson and supported by Nelson City Council.
