Stardome Observatory is an iconic Auckland institution, dedicated to exploring and sharing the wonders of space and astronomy. Featuring a cutting-edge 3D digital planetarium and advanced astronomical research telescopes, our facility offers educational, cultural, and entertainment experiences for visitors of all ages. Based in the One Tree Hill Domain, we foster meaningful connections with the local community, iwi, government agencies, and global science institutions.  We welcome over 80,000 visitors per year and employ approximately 30 staff as well as being supported by volunteers.

 

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

We are seeking a visionary, energetic Chief Executive to lead Stardome into an exciting future.  Reporting to the Auckland Observatory and Planetarium Trust Board, the CE will provide strategic leadership, inspire a culture of excellence, and build on our reputation as a leading astronomy institution. This role offers a rare opportunity to shape the future of science education and public engagement in New Zealand.
In particular you will:  

  • Lead the development and implementation of strategic and business plans, budgets, and organisational policies in partnership with the Trust Board.
  • Drive financial sustainability and maintain strong relationships with funders, stakeholders, and sponsors.
  • Create a collaborative, motivated, and high-performing workplace culture for staff and volunteers.
  • Oversee marketing, programming, and visitor experiences to enhance Stardome’s profile and visitor satisfaction.
  • Build and maintain positive, high trust relationships with key partners, including local government, iwi, educational institutions, and international partners.
  • Ensure operational excellence in research, education, property and asset management, and the overall management of the organisation. 

 

Ko wai koe | About you

You are a proven leader with a genuine interest in science, innovation and education.  Your background demonstrates strategic thinking, commercial acumen, and the ability to unite and motivate diverse teams.  Key experience and competencies include:

  • Experience as a senior leader in a not-for-profit likely in the GLAM or education space. 
  • A balance of innovative thinking, commercial acumen, and a pragmatic, get things done approach. 
  • Building effective relationships with stakeholders, funders, iwi, and community groups.
  • Demonstrating strong people leadership, team-building and communication skills.
  • A personal interest in astronomy, space science, mātauranga Māori or similar fields.
  • A commitment to cultural inclusivity, including working with iwi and Māori organisations.
  • A reputation as an energetic, get-things-done leader, as well as the intellectual curiosity to thrive in our organisation.
