  • Help make Tāmaki Makaurau a region alive with creativity
  • Activate our bold, innovative strategic vision for the creative sector
  • Shared CEO role, Te Tiriti foundation

Mō mātou | About Us

Auckland’s regional arts trust, Te Taumata Toi-a-Iwi, is seeking a bold, community-connected, strategic co-Chief Executive.

This appointee will lead Creative Tāmaki Makaurau, our unit which works to create a stronger sector voice, build understanding of the sector’s needs, and encourage a collaborative strategic response to those needs. You will work alongside the co-Chief Executive, Kaiwhakahaere, of our other unit, Te Manawa, which provides strategic leadership, visionary thinking, and direction toward achieving the goals and aspirations of hapori ringatoi Māori.

As co-Chief Executives you will work closely with each other and the Board, lead the delivery of the trust’s Strategic Plan and share responsibility for the effective management of the organisation.

We are not your typical arts trust. We’re standing at a turning point - ripe for innovation, grounded in deep relationships, and propelled by a powerful vision. This is the perfect time to ask ourselves “what does success look like?” both for Te Taumata Toi-a-Iwi and Auckland's creative community.

From our creation in 2001, our whakapapa was shaped by our name and whakatauki, gifted by Sir Hugh Kawharu - Seek the pathway of creativity as a kete of inspiration for Auckland. This is today the foundation for our kaupapa: Tāmaki Makaurau a region alive with creativity.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

As a co-Chief Executive, you will lead our waka alongside an equally driven partner. Together, you will uplift the mauri of the region’s arts ecosystem - activating partnerships, championing kaupapa Māori values, and shaping the future of a region alive with creativity.

Leading a small but dedicated team, you will help transform our creative sectors as you:

  • Power the activation of the Trust’s strategy and of Creative Tāmaki Makaurau alongside the other co-CEO (already appointed) who will lead Te Manawa
  • Strengthen sector capabilities and advance systemic advocacy
  • Actively seek opportunities for new funding and growth including co-investment
  • Ensure prudent management of our investment assets
  • Guide research and storytelling that inspires action
  • Build momentum through shared vision and co-designed delivery
  • Deepen engagement across communities, artists, and policy influencers
  • Ensure our operational and administrative backbone effectively supports our mahi

This will be a three day a week position with the potential for the role to grow along with the organisation.

Ko wai koe | About you

We are looking for a highly skilled leader, with broad management skills and a hunger to make a difference. Your experience will include:

  • Success in growing an organisation and securing new funding streams, likely having done so in the arts, community, or in philanthropic spaces
  • A deep commitment to collaboration, setting you up to thrive in a shared leadership model
  • The ability to inspire, influence, and deliver in equal measure, working across a diverse range of partners
  • A blend of big-picture thinking and day to day operational management
  • Commercial and financial acumen alongside your deep commitment to our values and communities

You’ll be hands-on, future-focused, and unafraid to challenge the norm. This is a unique platform to co-lead something extraordinary for Aotearoa New Zealand’s largest city.
