Preserving Aotearoa’s Technological Past, Present, and Future

MOTAT is seeking an experienced Curator – Technology to join our Curatorial Research team. This role is central to the research and development of our diverse technology collections, which span Communication Technology, Computing, Visual and Audio Technology, Domestic Technology and Industrial Heritage.

What You’ll Do:

  • Research, document and produce accurate content about items/taonga across MOTAT’s technology collections.
  • Enhance catalogue records to ensure accuracy, accessibility, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Respond to internal and external collection enquiries.
  • Participate in deaccessioning processes and contribute to strategic collection development.
  • Assess acquisition offers and prepare proposals to grow the collection with integrity and relevance.

What You’ll Bring:

  • 3–5 years of curatorial experience in a museum or cultural institution.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Sciences, Arts or a related field.
  • Subject knowledge of New Zealand’s technological history, from industrial heritage to contemporary technology, is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Vernon or similar collection management systems.
  • A strong commitment to bicultural practice and a willingness to learn and apply tikanga Māori.

  • Excellent research and organisational skills with a sharp eye for detail.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills within a diverse team environment.
