We are seeking an Education Assistant to join our small and dedicated team.

Te Uru is a leading home for contemporary culture, a regional gallery locally rooted in West Auckland but globally minded. A destination gallery that opened in 2014 as part of the refurbished Lopdell Precinct, Te Uru is West Auckland’s leading contemporary gallery. Our vision is to provide a unique perspective that is both local and international. Our programmes reflect our place in Aotearoa and the wider Moana region while connecting new ideas and different practices with local and global networks. We recognise Māori as Tangata Whenua and foster the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi internally and externally to enhance and develop our programmes.

As the Education Assistant, you will play a vital role in building engagement opportunities for the gallery. You will be a social and energetic person, who loves sharing ideas about art, and working with kids. This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate and motivated individual looking to grow their experience in art education.

This is a supportive, developmental position working closely with our Education Manager. It is a full-time role, Sunday to Thursday, with responsibilities across both education and visitor experience. The role includes front-of-house and retail duties on Sunday and Monday, and education support from Tuesday to Thursday.

The successful candidate will be driven by a commitment to grow the understanding of contemporary art and develop Te Uru’s audiences.

Education and Skills

It is beneficial to have:

  • a qualification in Art History, Fine Art or Education.
  • experience working with children or teaching experience.
  • knowledge and understanding of artistic practices in Aotearoa.

The Education Assistant should:

  • recognise and understand Aotearoa’s bi-culturalism and have an awareness of the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi to this and any role at the gallery.

  • have a high standard of interpersonal communication skills both verbal and written.

  • experience using Microsoft office suite and Adobe creative suite is desirable.
  • experience using website software such as Shopify is desirable.

  • be sensitive to the diverse cultural needs and practices of artists, visitors, and staff of the gallery.
