Te Uru is seeking a passionate and committed Education Manager to join our dedicated team. This role sits at the heart of the gallery, working with schools, children, young people, and adults to deliver inspiring, hands-on learning experiences. Together with the Education Assistant, you will oversee a wide-ranging programme that includes school visits, afterschool and holiday activities, and adult workshops.

About Te Uru
Te Uru is a leading home for contemporary culture: a regional gallery locally rooted in West Auckland and globally connected. A destination gallery since opening in 2014 as part of the refurbished Lopdell Precinct, we are Auckland’s second-largest public gallery. Our vision is to provide a unique perspective that is both local and international. Our programmes reflect our place in Aotearoa and the wider Moana region while connecting new ideas and practices with communities here and abroad. We recognise Māori as tangata whenua and are committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi throughout our organisation and programmes.

About the role
As Education Manager, you will play a vital role in building opportunities for engagement and learning across all areas of the gallery. You will lead activity in our stunning purpose-built Learning Centre, developing and delivering a dynamic schedule of education programmes. This is an excellent opportunity for a creative, organised, and visionary leader with a passion for art and education to grow the already strong reputation of Te Uru’s Learning Centre.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and delivering education workshops for schools and community groups in response to the gallery’s exhibitions.
  • Collaborating with curators, artists, and external tutors to create diverse, high-quality programmes.
  • Developing afterschool and holiday programmes to broaden community engagement.
  • Overseeing the Learning Centre budget and preparing reports for governance and local board requirements.

Education and Skills

Our ideal candidate has:

  • a qualification in Art History, Fine Art or Education.
  • experience working with children or teaching experience.
  • managerial experience.
  • knowledge and understanding of artistic practices in Aotearoa.
  • Experience working with a budget

The Education Manager should:

  • recognise and understand Aotearoa’s bi-culturalism and have an awareness of the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi to this and any role at the gallery.

  • have a positive attitude and enjoy working collaboratively as a team.

  • have a high standard of interpersonal communication skills both verbal and written.

  • ideally have experience using Microsoft office suite and Adobe creative suite.

  • be sensitive to the diverse cultural needs and practices of artists, visitors, and staff of the gallery.
