The newly established Visiting Artist Programme of Te Whare Toi o Heretaunga Hastings Art Gallery (HAG) offers an annual 8-week residency for Aotearoa artists towards the development of a solo exhibition project. The programme is designed to foster new connections within the Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke’s Bay region and support the development of unique bodies of work.

The inaugural visiting artist for 2024 is Heidi Brickell. Recognising the need for more open opportunities for established Aotearoa artists, HAG is calling for proposals for a residency beginning August 2025 and a subsequent exhibition in February 2026. We are seeking visiting artist projects which:

  • Present an opportunity for an artist to make new work
  • Couldn’t be developed elsewhere
  • Have the ability to engage audiences and communities in research, making or presentation processes
  • Build on a foundation of quality research, relationships, and artwork

Resourcing and support includes:

  • Accommodation and workspace in Heretaunga Hastings
  • Artist stipend of $1,260 per week (total of $10,080 for 8 weeks)
  • Domestic travel costs to and from Heretaunga Hastings
  • A research and materials budget during the residency of $4500
  • Curatorial, logistical, and technical support
  • Workshop access
  • Further support towards exhibition outcomes in February 2026

How To Apply

Please submit a proposal as a single PDF file under 10MB in size, including the following materials:

  1. A 500–800-word outline of your proposed project and residency activities as a visiting artist, and how you expect these could relate to your exhibition plans - details such as floorplans, budgets and mock-ups are not required
  2. An artist CV
  3. Up to 10 images, other media files, or links to previous work
  4. A referee (name, email, and phone number)
  5. If applicable, any access requirements and/or whānau requirements you have for accommodation

All submissions are to be sent to Assistant Curator Kurumi Kido: kurumik@hdc.govt.nz.

The deadline for proposals is Sunday 2 February 2025. Any proposals submitted after this day will not be considered.

Eligibility & Requirements

Artists must be citizens or legal permanent residents of Aotearoa New Zealand, based outside of Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke’s Bay.

The residency is for established artists who can demonstrate at least eight years of public exhibition practice.

The artist must be able to reside and work full-time in Heretaunga Hastings during the term of the residency.
